Objectivism in Moral Philosophy with Prof. Jon Tresan

Prof. Tresan's talk at our last spring meeting was excellent, and he was gracious enough to go out and share in imbibery and gluttony afterwards. A big thanks to him for everything, and to Holly for inviting him.

Please leave comments and thoughts if you attended.

I want to video document all our meetings with speakers from here on out. I finished uploading the video on April 25 at 6 AM but it took until a few hours ago to finish processing at GV. Enjoy it below the fold:

Gator Freethought Wins Recognition and Prize for Activism Efforts

**UPDATE: See the plaque (very nice one) here and here**

I was just notified that at The New Humanism conference at Harvard, our humble little freethought group (the plaque bears our old name) earned recognition for its media efforts in the past year! Hopefully, we can get some people up to the next one, as well as attending this summer's CFI conference June 15-17. Here's the registration form if you want to go, and let me know!

The Secular Student Alliance is to thank, especially August and Alison, for a $100 gift and a plaque. Check out blog coverage of the conference, as well as the Harvard student Crimson paper:
Congrats, freethinking Gators!

Meeting 16: Last Spring Meeting, April 21st, CLB 414, 1 PM

**UPDATE: See the video of his talk here**

We're meeting this Saturday (21st) at 1 pm in CLB 414 to hear Prof. Tresan talk about justification for objective morality. (meetings page)
Two things on the ballot:
  • Changing the name of the group
I think this has been coming for a long time. Names for groups like ours need to be short, easy to remember and tied with our identity at UF. This needs to be done within a week or two, because we have to re-register our group and I will need to use the new name on everything.

We will do this in a democratic fashion, but the officers have a little authority over occasional visitors. If you have a name suggestion, please leave a comment below, email or Facebook message me, and I'll add it to the list of consideration. I'll then keep a running tally of votes for each suggestion. Here are three suggestions to get started:
  1. Gator Freethought (my favorite) ---VOTES: 9---*
  2. Freethought UF ---VOTES: 0---
  3. Gator Secular Humanists (GaSH would be a kind of neat acronym) ---VOTES: 0---
**Nominated by Jaclyn:
  1. Converse ---VOTES: 1---**
  2. Why ---VOTES: 0---
  3. The Doubting Club ---VOTES: 0---
***Nominated by Dusty:
  1. Freethinking Gators ---VOTES: 1---***
****Nominated by Mario:
  1. Gator Atheists & Agnostics ---VOTES: 1---***

Second thing:
  • Designing a nice banner / logo
**UPDATE: We have banners, thanks to Ryan H, see them here**

The empty set was never meant to be permanent. Just like the name, our banner design needs to be simple but tied to our identity at UF. Obviously, we will need to incorporate the new name, so leave off the text, make up 3 different ones with the 3 different names, or put in a generic, "Group Name Here" in your design. Here is the old one:

I will showcase these here on the blog also and we will vote on them. For some inspiration, check out Dave Misvel's earlier work: banner, handouts, (all).

Again, we need to hurry on both of these issues. See you all Saturday.
