I think I can guess why the people who knew they were being prayed for fared worse. People pray for things when they feel helpless to do anything else. If you know someone is praying for you, that implies that they think the situation is hopeless and that you're likely to die. In this sort of context saying I'll pray for you is equivalent to gee I really hope you don't die. Hearing something like that doesn't make you feel very confident about your chances of pulling through. --Lynne (not really anonymous, but haven't signed up for an account yet.)
