Unfortunately, a large percentage of the American populace is ignorant of the number of atheists in their midst. They also are guilty of both mischaracterizing the quality of these persons, and holding undue prejudice towards them. Evidence to support my premises can be found in this study showing the amount of prejudice against atheists, the video that is embedded below the fold, these statistics reflecting the number of atheists out there, and Doug Robeson's collection of famous/well-known unbelievers.

The studies that found that fewer self-identify as atheists than claim not to believe in god is indicative of an intrinsic negative connotation to the term atheist. It can be safely inferred that there are those who similarly were unwilling to admit they don't believe in a god under the same fear of being seen as an atheist.
ReplyDeleteThis is very significant factor in why we might be seen as an insignificant minority. If we're to achieve recognition we should begin by attempting to promote "atheist" in a positive light. This has been discussed before at our meetings but I know I'm not alone when I share my fear of fully exposing myself as an atheist and bearing the reaction. This is something we must all overcome if we're to be successful at achieving a positive influence on our community.
I look forward to seeing you guys during the tabling. :)
I agree that the "real" percentage of persons who are atheists is often much higher than non-confidential and self-identification surveys reflect. ARIS CUNY showed 14% as "non-religious". I hesitate to speculate, but I'd bet at least 10% of those are atheists and agnostics.
