Gator Freethought, in cooperation with the Servants of Christ Anglican Church, is hosting a debate this Saturday on the historical origins of Christianity. The speakers are
Dr. Michael Green and
Dr. Robert Price, both esteemed religious scholars--one a reverend, one an atheist. Come on out this Saturday at 7 and participate in the (no doubt lively) Q&A session to follow our speakers' 20-minute presentations. The debate will be held in the Medical Science Building Auditorium, room N2-2000. More information can be found below in the flyer and the maps.

This is more of a question about the upcoming debate.
ReplyDeleteThe title is "Is Christianity based on a Lie?" However, the details mention that the merits of the Bible will be debated. If the merits of the Old Testament, or Torah are included in the discussion, this has ramifications for Islam and Judaism as well, as Islam has the same OT prophets, and Judaism's entirety is based on the Torah.
Thanks.
Good question, anonymous. While I'm not quite sure, I think the speakers plan to focus on the writings surrounding Jesus, rather than attempt to discuss the entirety of the Bible--although I'm sure it will be discussed in one form or another. You'll also be interested to know that the Christian speaker chose the slogan.
ReplyDeleteBut I think regardless of the direct subject (whether the New or Old Testament), the debate will have ramifications, as you suggest, for both Islam and Judaism--because I predict many of the same arguments each speaker will make will also be meaningful to believers and nonbelievers of those religions as well.
Someone stopped me today and said that we ought to have had speakers from Islam and Judaism represented as well. I totally agree; unfortunately, our resources are just too limited. It's costing us a couple hundred dollars just to fly one of the speakers here; it would simply be impossible, at least for our group's current size, to add two or more speakers to the list.
Thanks for your comment. And I hope to see you there--although you'll have to introduce yourself. I don't think I quite recognize your name. :)

Anonymous says that Judaism's entirety is based upon the "Torah".
ReplyDeleteThis is a very false statement the whole of what is considered the Old Testament is called the Tanakh to them and the Torah makes up only a brief part of that.
Also there is the Talmud which is very significant in Judaism.
Ahh, yes. You are correct. The Torah is only the first five books, right? Now I also know how to spell Tanakh.
